There are two rich brothers, and by rich I mean filthy rich, they own a commodities brokerage on Wall Street, stately homes and chauffeur driven limousines ferrying them from luxury restaurants to their gentleman’s club. The rich men are bored with the daily grind of making millions on shorting stocks so they devise a game more of bet to see how two men would cope if their lives were turned upside down.
The first man, a reputable honest, hard working senior partner in the brokerage firm, mixed with the upper echelon of society and about to marry a very wealthy heiress. The guy’s life is pretty much a fairy tale.
The second guy on the other hand is a chancer, a down and out a deadbeat who sits in the streets with his hands out begging for change, no home, no job and no future. The guy sits around waiting for lady luck to come and rescue him.
So a bet is arranged and a set of circumstances are put into place in order to switch the guy’s lives around.
The Story of the Wino
Lady luck lands on the shoulders of the chancer and in an instant his life turns around. He goes from begging on the street to having a personal butler, a luxury home and well paid job. But the transformation does not end there. In a bid to be accepted by his new peers, a radical transformation occur; gone is the foul mouthed wino from the streets replaced by a suave, sophisticated, successful broker.
The chancer goes back to what he knows, the people he knows, and the places he frequented before to show off his new found wealth, his new lifestyle his new image. All the group see is the limousine, the flash house and the money. The chancer quickly realises that these people weren’t friends they weren’t there when he was on the street and so he kicks them in to touch and moves on.
In his new life as a broker the chancer acts the part as a member of the wealthy elite. He starts going to posh restaurants and smoking clubs, where for all his endeavours he never really fits in. He knows that people can see right through the facade, they don’t accept him and they never will. His story is not his own, it’s a fake designed so he can attempt to fit in.
The brokers story
In stark contrast Mr Reputable falls from grace hard. His job is taken away, his bank accounts frozen, his “friends”turn their backs on him and his fiancĂ©e leaves him. Mr Reputable ends up on skid row with nothing more than the clothes on his back and his story.
The environment in which he finds himself is a million miles from the luxury that he is accustomed to. He tries everything to take his life back but the evil brothers have manipulated the situation so much that no matter which way he turns he finds himself shunned. But one thing that never changes, the one thing that remains constant is his story and due to that he finds support and solace and gains a loyal following that believe in him.
So you may think this is some kind of fairy tale, well it’s not. Not really. In fact this is a nineties film called Trading Places starring Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy. Oh and how could I forget, Jamie Lee Curtis. If you haven’t seen it, then watch it. The film is absolutely hilarious.
I am not going to tell you how the picture ends because if I did then it will spoil the film for those of you that haven’t seen it. Let’s just say the truth always rises to the top!
Why I am telling you this story?
So why I have told this elaborate story? Well the fact is all of us aspire to something greater, if you don’t then you need to have a serious word with yourself, you can keep waiting on lady luck and maybe one day she might come along and give you the life of your dreams or with determination, persistence, commitment, hard work and true belief in yourself and your story you can make it to the top regardless of your situation or the current environment you find yourself in.
People want to work with people that they believe in, people want to connect with people that they have a bond with. Each and every one of us has a story to tell and your story is unique, don’t ever think that you need to adjust your story, to fabricate it, as just like Eddie Murphy’s character, if You don’t believe it then how can you expect anyone else to believe that story, because deep down you will know it is not true. .
Share Your Story
Each and every one of us has walked a different path to get where we stand today. Be proud of that path and more importantly have the courage and conviction to share your story with gusto to the people that you meet on your journey.
Connections, bonds, business relationships and friendships are built on your story be true to yourself and your network will grow and with it your prosperity.
