Wibiya Tool Bar - What is it? How to Get it and Why?
A commenter my blog, Lori Ferguson asked me the following question;
What is the Wibiya Tool Bar
Well, if you look to the very bottom of this page you will see a blue bar that spans the entire length of the blog. The tool bar starts at the bottom left of the page with a little globe and the word ‘Translate’ and ends on the right hand side with a little down arrow and a lock. As a user scrolls down your blog the toolbar is always visible at the bottom unless minimized.
The toolbar is a free application that I have had on my website for around 3 months, however there is also a paid version. According to the company that made the toolbar Conduit:
Adding the Wibiya toolbar to your website allows you to easily increase page views and user engagement, and promote your content. Wibiya offers a variety of free apps, enabling you to extend your content’s exposure and provide users with a more interactive experience of your website.
Without regurgitating what the official line from the developer, the reasons that I use the Wibiya Toolbar are as follows.
Increases Sharing
The Wibiya toolbar makes it very easy for your audience to share your material. All they have to do is select the medium that they want to share to, login and that is it. Simple! The easier you can make it for people to share the better.
Have I found that it increase sharing myself? Yes, however to give a fair appraisal I have produced a lot more content over the past 3 months and as such it could be fair to assume the increase in sharing could be directly proportional.
Increased Sharing Implies Greater Social Proof
The more shares, Tweets and +1s your content has, the greater your small busniess social media presence. By that I mean a tweet or a share by someone in your social circles acts as a recommendation that the content is worth checking out.
Sharing Allows for Connection
Personally, if someone takes the time to review and share my material I will quite often check that person out online. If what I find is interesting and relevant then I will take the time to share with my circle. By sharing, which the wibya toolbar, allows then it increases the chances of connecting and building a rapport. How do you get the Wibiya Toolbar
In conclusion, I think the Wibiya toolbar is a good addition to my blog, although I welcome your feedback of course. It is quite discrete, it doesn’t jump out like pop ups, which I am not a big fan of. It is not garish and of course, it is free! So would it be good for you? If it increases the amount of shares and interaction you have with your fan base then I can only see that being a benefit.
I would be interested to know what plugins or tools you use to improve the usability of your blog for your audience? If you leave a good comment or ask a great question then the next blog might be about you!

Glad you posted this. I’m using shareaholic. I’ve consciously chosen not to use more than one sharing tool because I think it starts to look cluttered and a bit desperate (my opinion). I’ve seen the Wibiya bar used by some very powerful social media people so gave it some thought but I just don’t like the way it looks. I don’t think it offers any more value than any of the other share plugins that I can tell but I’m open to being proven wrong.

It all boils down to what is right for you and your audience. If it doesn’t offer any value then you are right not to install it.
As with all plugins and in fact most things on the internet you can test it and see if adds any benefit. If it doesn’t then you can simply remove.
I recently added the wibiya bar to my website and am really digging it. I love that the right hand side allows people to check out my twitter stream and fan page without ever leaving my site. Adding it is a painless process too. I am just hopeful they will add pinterest to the social media options soon. Thanks for sharing this in UBC.

Hi Melissa,
With all the positive noise that Pinterest is getting right now, I am sure it will only be a matter of time before Wibiya provide the capability to connect.
Thanks for visiting.

I like that there are a lot of share plugins available so it will only be a matter of what works for me. I also like the way Wibiya makes sharing your post very convenient for the readers.
