Twitter can be quite frenetic at times.
Perhaps you could consider using lists to select the people who you want to follow or particular subject influencers. That way you only have to tune into the conversations that matter.

i agree, twitter can be a little too much when you are just a one person operation. It is easier to make connections with facebook and it is still good to use twitter for announcements and such.

I always tell clients that it is about finding the best social media platform for them.
If Facebook is more intuitive then use Facebook, if Twitter fits with the customer demographic then use Twitter.
Test and track the result and from there make a decision on where to invest the most resources.
