Online Marketing Web Page Copywriting – 8 Tips to Make an Impact.

Online marketing web page copy writing is about getting the right content to the right person at the right time. It is about attracting and maintaining attention with compelling content that drives a reaction. In this post you will get 10 actionable tips that will help you make an impact online.

1. Know your reader

Every single piece of copy that you write on the web is targeted at a specific user demographic. Know exactly who that is, what they like, what they don’t like, what they want to learn about, what makes them laugh.

You wouldn’t produce the same copy for a middle aged housewife with two children as you would for a 15 year old high school student, as they both have different challenges and expectations.

The more that you can tune into that audience, the greater the chance you have of invoking a response.

2. Size Matters

Keep content short and simple. The internet makes it easy to surf between one site and the next. The majority of people who are scanning your site have short attention spans so aim to please. How long should a Blog post be is something that I talked about previously. Some key pointers are:

  • Use Short paragraphs
  • Use Heading and bullets to break up the text
  • Write Active Content

People arrive at your site because they are looking for a solution; whether that is to quell boredom, answer a specific search query or find out more about your experience.

Content should be written in an action-orientated style. Every sentence needs to move the reader towards an action, a subscription, a solution.

One of the best posts I have written that exemplifies this is “How to write blogs like a Superhero

3. Think Link

The internet is about links and connections. If you write a 500 word document that has no links in it then effectively you are leading the reader down a dead end. Don’t let that happen. The search engines look at links, both external and internal to categorize the importance of a piece of content.

4. Keywords

Online marketing web page copy writing is about using terms that users are searching for. Write to be found. If you are not using search terms that your audience is looking for then your content will not be hitting the demographic you want. In fact it probably won’t be found by anyone and your investment will be a complete waste of time.

Before you start any online marketing campaign think about the keywords that you want to target and structure your content around them.

5. Write GREAT titles

Titles are the most critical component to the success of your online marketing web page copywriting. That’s because:

  • People scan read. If the title is not interesting they are gone.
  • Titles are indexed by search engines – If your title is lousy then no-one will click on it.

Some tips for writing Titles that get clicked

  • Keep it under 70 characters. Some search engines only show the first 70 characters
  • Get your keywords in as soon as possible
  • Keep it clear and concise
  • Don’t be too clever – Just because you know something don’t assume that your audience understand that.

6. Start with a bang

Many readers will read the title and check out the opening excerpt. If that doesn’t grab their attention then they are off. Think of it like making the first impression. You have to work damn hard.

When composing emails you also need to utilize online marketing web page copywriting skills and in this post “How to start an email so the reader is obliged to read to the very endyou will get great actionable tips.

7. Give a Strong Call to Action

Each piece of web copy that you write should have a single, unique goal. It could be to get a reader’s email address, it could be to get your content shared on social media platforms, it could be to get the reader to add their opinion. Whatever it is you need to make sure that you give the reader a strong enough reason to do it and you make it clear as day.

8. Don’t be a fool. Edit.

Once you have finished writing your copy take the time to edit it. Again and again and even again. Always remember, just because it came out of your mind it doesn’t mean it makes sense to anyone else. Print it out, read out loud to yourself and see if the copy flows. If it doesn’t then make changes. It goes without saying that the last thing you want is for someone to pick you up on a spelling mistake or grammatical error, so be thorough.

If at all possible see if someone else will edit your content for you as they can act as a sound board for the quality of the content and actually answer the crucial question, “Does it make sense?”

Don’t be put off by online marketing web copywriting. The simple fact is that if you want to make an impact online then you need to be found in the relevant places, by the relevant people giving relevant information and that means sitting down, constructing a content marketing strategy and putting fingers to the keyboard and getting on with it. It might be difficult at first but the more you write the easier it will become.
