You have spent hours creating, what is in your eyes, killer content but no matter how cool you think your site is, or how fabulous your product, you’re not going to generate enough sales to make your business profitable unless you know how to promote a blog successfully. You have to get the word out about your site and give people a reason to visit it, or else you’ll put yourself and more importantly your business on the endangered species list.
You are not dead yet. The good news is, there are lots of ways to proactively advertise your blog online and drive tons of targeted traffic to your site, for free! And by targeted, I mean people who belong to your niche market and who are most likely to put their hands in their pockets and buy the products or services you offer.
So let’s get to it, here’s our countdown of the top 7 traffic-generating tactics:
How To Promote A Blog using Quality Content
OK, so I know you have just sighed and said to yourself “not again”but it cannot be ignored. You have to post fresh content all the time. I am not talking about any old rubbish; I am talking about posting quality content on a regular basis. Both visitors and the search engines love new content so make sure you post often. It is important however, that you maintain your standards. If you are just starting a blog there are going to be days when you suffer from writers block or just lack that killer edge, battle through and make sure that you get great stuff out there.
The more content you have, the greater the chance of ranking for more keywords, which will mean an increase in organic traffic.
How to Promote A Blog using Social Bookmarking Sites
Use Social Bookmarking sites like Digg and Stumbleupon. In order to get success from these social bookmarking sites remember they are called “social”for a reason. If you just go in and promote your own content then you are adding no value to the community, which means you will not generate any traffic to your site.
To add value to the community be active spend an allotted time each day, even if it’s only 5 or 10 minutes, reading other peoples posts and liking and sharing them. The more you participate the more people are likely to reciprocate and your posts will be shared.
You can also you use social bookmarking software tools such as Social Monkee that allows you to syndicate to many sites at once.
How to Promote a Blog using Forums
If you want to drive targeted traffic to your blog then you need to go where the traffic is. If you are in the herbal remedies niche then find forums that relate to herbal remedies. Join the community and contribute to prove yourself to be the expert in your field by answering questions and providing comments for other users.
Always provide a link back to your blog in your profile and you could even sign up using the name of your blog as your username. Every time someone sees a post from you they will see the name of your blog. Curiosity killed the cat, but it may just bring new readers to your blog!
How to Promote a Blog using Video.
We are all aware that video is the hottest thing in marketing right now. Why? Quite simply because that is where there is huge numbers of traffic. If you want to know how to promote a blog then adding video is vital. Video sites such as Youtube, Vimeo and Metacafe, to name but a few, get tons and tons of traffic because people like to consume information in different ways. So introduce videos into your marketing mix in order to better promote your blog.
If you write a good post then make a video out of it. You could make a simple introductory video giving an appetizer of what they can expect and then leading them to your blog for the main course.
- Make sure you add your blog’s URL to an opening or closing “scene”of the video.
- Add a link to your blog in the description.
- Leave comments on “related”popular videos mentioning your blog URL
How To Promote A Blog using Social Media
I couldn’t do a list of How to promote a blog without mentioning using social media. As with the video sites there are millions and millions of potential visitors to your blog and prospects for your business crawling all over social media sites like Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. If you are not on and contributing on these sites then you need to ask yourself why not? If the leading brands in the world are on them that tells you something. It tells you that social media is profitable and using social media for business is non negotiable. So stop procrastinating and get on it!
- Make sure you have your blog URL on your profile or information pages.
- When you create new content share it with your followers and friends.
- Like forums, social media sites have groups. Join groups that are relevant to your niche and post related content in those groups always linking back to your blog.
- Share and comment on other peoples’ content. You will find this will get reciprocated.
How To Promote A Blog by Writing Content for Other Sites
Getting your name out there and recognized as a leader in your field is paramount to the success of your blog. So leverage the readership of other sites in your field to help promote your blog.
There are sites such as Ezinearticles that allow you to submit articles around whichever subject you like. Write quality content and publish to Ezinearticles making sure that you complete your profile and have a link back to your blog. You can also add URLs in the body of the article back to your site that provide great back links from a high PR (Page Rank) site.
Ezinearticles is not the only site, there are so many, Squidoo and Hubpages carry good ranking and have good traffic.
You can also search for the leading blogs or sites in your niche, approach the webmaster, and find out if you could submit a guest post. Again the site already has credibility in your niche, so why not leverage that to build your brand.
How To Promote A Blog by making it Easy to Share.
You have created quality content, you have promoted your blog and you are getting targeted traffic to your blog. The readers are lapping everything up. One problem, there is no way for them to share it with their friends or followers. Big Mistake, Huge! (as said by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman!)
Make it so that your blog posts are easy to share. If you use WordPress then get and install a plug-in such as Sociable or SexyBookmarks, and more importantly make sure that they work.
This list is not exhaustive, there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to promote your blog but they all come back to having the quality content to promote in the first place. Get your thinking cap on and start creating content today and sharing other people’s too. Start by sharing this post “How to promote a Blog -7 Super Ways to Get You Started“with your friends by using the share buttons below, connect with me and let me know when you have new content and I will come and check it out and reciprocate the process.

Correct, both things do help for many reasons. Two of which are
1. More backlinks
2. More potential visitors to your site.
Do not overlook the fact that having a social media presence on several platforms can get difficult to manage, so do not over commit yourself. Communicate and share with your audience and you will soon build your readership.
Thanks James for these priceless tips. I suppose I need to discover how to be a guest writer for other blogs – would never have thought of that!

Titus,
The best thing to do is research who is the authority in your niche. Once you know this you can either search their website to see if they allow guest bloggers or simply drop them an email, giving an introduction about yourself and what area of expertise you would like to cover in your post.
Give the site owner an example of your work or a link to your blog so they can review your material to see if it is suitable for their audience. I hope that helps.
Thanks
James
Hey James
Yeah, I hear you on the video/you-tube part. I want to try it, but I’m quite shy and feel uncoimfortable about sitting in front of a camera, I guess I need to overcome my scruples and get it done and get used to it? An being a guest-writer is another idea I have not thought of…or even heard of
Than ks for your excellent article

Hi Ivan,
If you feel shy and uncomfortable then you could always start by doing presentations using software such as Jing to record powerpoint. This will help you find your voice and build your confidence before really getting in front of the camera.
Above all else just face your fear and get your videos out there.
Good luck,
James

Hi John,
Best bit of advice I could give would be – don’t get bogged down on trying to learn everything.
Things on the internet constantly change, write quality content and promote it using one or two methods. When you find success then look at adding other strategies to the mix.
Write good content and be patient and it will happen.
Good Luck,
James
Hi there! This is my 1st visit here. Great advice. My only problem is learning how to incorporate video in my site. The real problem is, personally, I will skip over a post if it is “just video”, I simply don’t want to watch it.. give me the option to also read the post and/or listen to the post.. why because I can read the post very quickly and I can listen to the post while doing other things, but watching the post requires more of me… I just don’t want to give it… so for that reason it is hard for me to even do video on my own blog. Trying to figure out whether it is a “must” or if I can continue to get away without video of my own. We do have destination videos on some posts… does this count?

Hi Shonda,
I think there should be a good mix of both video and text.
Different people consume information better in different formats. Some in text, some with video, some with pictures. My sugestion would e to have a good mix so that your users can choose what they want to view.

James
very interesting . Thank you so much for your great efforts.
Hi Muhamed,
Thanks for the kind comment.

An additional way to use social media you didn’t mention is to have Twitter, Facebook Like, etc links on each post to let people mention they have read it. I would class this separately to social bookmarking which is more the Reddit/Digg side of things, which also help of course.
I notice you have the Google +1 button on this post for example and Twitter/Facebook on the ‘share and enjoy’ bar underneath.
It brings people to that specific post rather than the blog homepage but it still helps to get the readers in. As well as it spreading to that persons friends it is also a backlink for you on the search engines.

Hi Brian,
Giving the reader the ability to share your comment with the following easily is paramount to the success of blog promotion. It is far easy to have other people share your content for you then having to do all the work yourself.
On top of that Google is now placing more and more emphasis on the importance of social signals when it comes to ranking.
Thanks for your comment and I trust having noticed all the ways to share the post you did share with your following.

James

Thanks James.. ill keep this in mind.. do checkout my blog and let me know your feedback.
Thanks James. I am not computer friendly and found your information for once didn’t scare the bejeebers out of me before I even started. Very inspiring for a novice. If I wanted to create a blog merely to get ‘out there’ a humorous character story line for readers to follow what would be the best way to go about that. Info very useful to create readers from similar sites but you talk of quality content and product so not sure how that relates to my niche. Maybe with the dark, dank void left side of my brain along with my lack of internet participation I am missing something everbody else can see. Thats not unusual. Will definately share your site with whoever has the need for easy to read instructions.
Hi Glo,
Good luck with starting your blog and thanks for commenting.
